Maybe it's not do we believe or don't we believe, but how much helplessness society wishes to tolerate. Shell shock, which became a thing after WWI, resulted in the spontaneous establishment of field hospitals with hundreds of individuals manifesting the "condition". Finally, someone in command insisted that this was not something the services were prepared to indulge to this extent and all the tents were folded and the field hospitals were shut down. While there is certainly a spectrum of severity in terms of such conditions, life is difficult, bad things happen to all of us, and we either learn to cope better or decide to give in expecting less of ourselves. We may need help recognizing we can learn ways to moderate the risk of recurrence and to be more realistic about any potential of recurrence of the horrific event, but often the individuals most vulnerable to avoidance and dissociation have many antecedent experiences which have occurred for which they are already poorly dealing with and find their suboptimal coping mechanisms at the tipping point of collapsing. Such individuals will require more psychotherapy to address entrenched thoughts about themselves and life's risks before they can resume effective functioning.

❤ I have both books and I’m part of the inner circle, however, very discreetly because it’s difficult with my timing from Europe and my own agendas, and I just had a two day workshop with Michael Mokrus …. I have to say that the NARM approach, our method is to my experience, study and research along my whole life, such an inclusive Heartful, non-pathologizing and non-judgmental approach , as it is putting accent on curiosity and looking at the humans, we are with the understanding that our story created survival states/distortion/Iidentification …. I found it very complete, and I’m sure it will still evolve, and I really liked the part of respecting what people have at heart (talking about the soul, talking about spirit, talking about whatever is important for the one) and that is often indeed, talked down or poorly and judgmentally by many people from many different venues. This is something I really appreciate with you guys also in this interview thank you so much for this. ❤

What an important conversation! Thank you for sharing it and daring to explore and talk about this issue! I too felt nervous about the prospective of sharing it with some of my friends who are maybe Muslims as there is this confusion about racism and Islamophobia and abuse. I also feel how it resonate in me about trauma in families and how it is difficult to speak about it with other members, how they will feel the need to protect the group even if it means denying the trauma one of the member has encountered, it means they can deny their own vulnerability and own trauma eventually too….

I think its really unkind and inappropriate for folks to comment about the interviewers voice.. did find it odd that she didnt seem to have heard about drama triangle (plus) roles , but perhaps that was an effort to give the audience a way in. Separatley.. i do think, regarding the non responsive bystander role, that while projectice, clients are often projecting past mental heath providers , as well as or instead of the original bystander in their family

23:00 there was a lot of, This is what X disorder looks like, and there wasnt a lot of mention of trauma, like, Yea, these are people who are messed up, who have mental illness, not These are people who are in pain, because they are responding appropriately to traumatic experiences. 🤜🏽🤛🏽 There's no disorder.

Excellent interview. His point that there is a glut of therapists and that access isn't the real issue sounds spot on. Indeed, the real issue is the lack of meaningful psychotherapy available. The good clinicians I know really are booked up. Also, patients should be educated about something else: professional fees tend to be positively correlated with the quality of services. Thus, patients who "value shop" for a therapist are making a big mistake. Fees, as long as they are usual and customary, should be the patient's last consideration. For example, would they also prefer the cheapest surgeon available if they went into hospital - good luck with that.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:47 *🎙️ Addiction and mental health conditions can be seen as normal responses to abnormal circumstances, rather than solely as diseases of the brain.* 05:30 *🤔 Childhood adaptations like addiction or depression are often defensive mechanisms to cope with emotional distress or trauma.* 09:42 *🌱 Finding meaning in addictions or maladaptive behaviors involves understanding their adaptive function in response to past trauma or distress.* 14:15 *🐘 Human nature is not inherently selfish or aggressive; it's shaped by communal, cooperative tendencies observed in natural settings, not artificial environments like modern society.* 19:22 *🧒 Irreducible needs of children for healthy development include a secure attachment relationship and an environment where they don't have to work to maintain that relationship.* 20:45 *🧠 Children have four fundamental needs: safety, emotional connection, freedom to experience emotions, and play.* 23:31 *🚼 Parenting practices that deny children's essential needs can interfere with healthy brain development.* 27:58 *💡 To foster creativity and healthy brain development, limit children's exposure to screens and encourage outdoor play.* 30:34 *📱 Introducing technology to children should be guided by strong attachment relationships with adults to prevent negative effects.* 35:33 *💖 Healing from trauma involves reconnecting with oneself and nurturing supportive relationships.* 38:47 *🧘‍♂️ Various therapeutic approaches like Compassionate Inquiry, Internal Family Systems, and mindfulness can facilitate healing, but there's no one-size-fits-all solution.* 40:11 *📚 "The Myth of Normal" confronts readers with the societal constructs that pull them away from their true needs, encouraging self-discovery and a shift towards what truly matters.* 41:33 *📖 "The Myth of Normal" serves as a reflective mirror for readers, co-written with Dr. Maté's son, Daniel, to make complex topics reader-friendly and insightful.* 42:30 *🤝 Dr. Maté and his son collaborated on the book to ensure clear communication, coherent structure, and accessibility for readers.* 43:39 *🌟 Dr. Maté and Daniel are working on a new book, "Hello Again: A Fresh Start for Adult Children and Their Parents," expected to be released in late 2024 or 2025, exploring personal and generational healing.* 44:06 *🎙️ Dr. Maté conducts workshops with Daniel, discussing their work, and plans to explore the topics further in future podcasts or interviews.* Made with HARPA AI

DID may be true in the severely traumatised. The issue is that we often see it in those with no trauma or minimal trauma history, and that's why there is doubt over the likelihood of minimal trauma causing such an extreme reaction, or 'DID'.
